Overcoming Overwhelm
Aug 31, 2023In the fast-paced world we live in, it's not uncommon to find ourselves drowning in a sea of commitments, tasks, and responsibilities. It's that sensation of being buried beneath a mountain of to-dos, often accompanied by a racing mind and a sense of helplessness. It can stem from work pressures, personal responsibilities, or the constant stream of information we encounter daily.
The feeling of being overwhelmed can be suffocating, leaving us anxious, stressed, and struggling to keep our heads above water. I totally get it, as I’ve certainly been there myself, so now that I understand how to navigate this sea of overwhelm and find the calm and clarity we all need and want, I’ll share some practical strategies to help you overcome overwhelm and regain control of your life.
Overwhelm often manifests as stress, anxiety, and a feeling of being unable to cope. Recognising these signs is the first step toward addressing the issue. Pay attention to your body and mind; they're sending you signals.
Learning to prioritise and delegate tasks often takes more time than doing it ourselves. However, you need to make a choice to place your well-being as the priority. Not everything on your plate is equally important. Identify your top priorities and delegate tasks that can be handled by others. This simple shift can significantly reduce your workload. Go on, give it a go and feel the difference between not being overloaded and being in task mode!
Overwhelm can arise from setting unrealistic expectations for yourself. So set realistic goals by breaking your goals into smaller, manageable steps, and celebrate each accomplishment along the way.
Stay calm, our brains love to catastrophise and imagine the worst outcome, which rarely happens, so practice mindfulness by using techniques such as meditation and deep breathing can help calm your racing mind and bring you back to the present moment. Trust me, it’s not only you who will benefit!
Develop effective time management skills. Tools like to-do lists, calendars, and time-blocking can help you stay organised and in control. Try different methods until you find one that resonates with you. I personally felt stressed when I used time blocking because when I looked at my very full calendar, I felt like I had no time at all! However, time blocking works really well for other people.
Learn to Say No! It's okay to decline new commitments when you're already overwhelmed. Setting boundaries is an act of self-care and self-respect!
Reach out and seek support. Don't hesitate to ask for help from friends, family, or professionals if overwhelm persists. Sometimes, sharing your feelings can provide relief and guidance. And we learn from listening to other people’s perspectives.
Overcoming overwhelm is a journey, not a destination. It requires consistent effort and self-compassion. Remember that it's okay to seek help and that you don't have to face this challenge alone. We will never get it “all” done, as life eternally unfolds, day by day and minute by minute. Remember, there are three things that you can control: your thoughts, your perspective and the effort you put in.
I’m here to support your journey toward a calmer, more balanced life, which is why I’ve created a program called Manage Your Mind To Master Your Life to help you do exactly that!
