Are you living your life in fear or freedom?
May 12, 2023
As a mindset coach, who is passionate about empowering my clients to live their best lives, I often encounter people who feel trapped and stuck in their own lives. They feel like they are living in a constant state of fear and anxiety, unable to break free from the negative thoughts and beliefs that hold them back. It's a common problem that affects many of us, but the good news is that it's possible to change our mindset and start living a life of freedom. Limiting beliefs can not be given to us, and they are all of our own creations. So that’s good news! It means that since we created those beliefs, we can change them!
The first step is to recognise the fear that's holding you back. Fear can take many forms - it could be a fear of failure, a fear of judgment, a fear of the unknown, or a fear of change. Whatever it is, acknowledging and accepting it is the first step towards overcoming it. When I explain to my clients how our brains are wired and the impacts of our conditioning, it helps stop the spiralling of thoughts and brings clarity faster.
Once you've identified your fears, it's time to start challenging them. Ask yourself whether your fears are based on reality or on assumptions. Are they holding you back from doing something you really want to do? Are they stopping you from pursuing your dreams? Often, we create imaginary barriers for ourselves that hold us back from living a fulfilling life. Or another favourite is that we make up excuses as to why we can’t do what matters most to us.
To overcome these barriers, it's important to start taking action. Break down your goals into smaller, more manageable steps, and start working towards them. I like using SMART goals. Make sure they are:
Specific: A goal should be clearly defined and specific. It should answer the questions of who, what, where, when, and why.
Measurable: A goal should have measurable criteria for success. This allows you to track progress and determine when the goal has been achieved.
Achievable: A goal should be realistic and achievable. It should be challenging but not impossible.
Relevant: A goal should be relevant to your overall objectives and aspirations. It should align with your values, mission, and vision.
Time-bound: A goal should have a specific deadline or time frame for completion. This helps to create a sense of urgency and accountability.
By using the SMART framework, you can create goals that are clear, specific, and attainable. This can help you to stay focused and motivated as you work towards achieving your goals.
Celebrate your successes along the way, no matter how small they may seem. Each step you take will bring you closer to your ultimate goal of living a life of freedom. This has such a big impact when you incorporate this practice into your life! By celebrating your wins, you begin to change the wiring in your brain to be able to view life in a more positive framework.
Finally, it's important to cultivate a positive mindset. Surround yourself with positive people who support and encourage you. The people you hang out with really matter; they do and will influence you! Practice gratitude and focus on the things you have rather than the things you don't have. Make time for self-care and self-reflection, and prioritise your mental and emotional well-being.
Remember, living a life of freedom is a choice. And it's a choice only you can make if you want to challenge your fears, take action towards your goals, and cultivate a positive mindset. With dedication and persistence, you can break free from the fear that's been holding you back and start living a life of true freedom and fulfilment, and create a life you don’t want to escape!
